      CWGC details : Son of Kararehe Pera, of Waihirere, Gisborne, New Zealand AWMM
    • May 1916 - Word was received to-day of the death by accident, of Private Piana Pera who left with the First Maori Contingent. The following telegraphs have been received by Mr Pera Kararehe, Waerenga-a-hika, the bereaved father, "Regret to advise you that a cable received this day reports that your son Piana Pera was accidentally killed on April 16th 1916, the result of falling off a train. Please accept my sincerest sympathy the loss, which you. and New Zealand have sustained.- J S Allen Minister of Defence. The Governor is commanded by the King to assure you of the true sympathy of His Majesty and the Queen in your sorrow. I am directed to convey to you an expression of their Excellencies' sincere sympathy in the loss suffered. Hamilton, private secretary."
