  • To my great-grandfather Winiata Pekamu Tapihana, two days ago I had the honour to retell your story at the rotorua civic ceremony on anzac day in front of around 900 people. The story of how a young maori boy from maketu had such a big impact on the liberation of le quesnoy. A story that will live through the generations of our whanau. Although I was never able to meet you personally, I see your essence through my father and through your son Tere. The courage and perseverance you showed in the many major battles you served in does not go unnoticed. Your memory will not die. We will remember you.
