  • Hona TE TOA died 30th April 1946 in Rotorua
When the whare near Te Wairoa village, in the Rotorua district, in which he had lived alone for 15yrs was burned to the ground in the early hours on Monday morning a 89-year-old Maori, Hona Te Toa, lost his life. Mr Te Toa was seen at abt 4pm on Monday, & he was then apparently in good health.
When passing at 9 o’clock on Tuesday, Ian Davidson, an employee of the Tourist Department, noticed that Mr. Te Ton’s shack, which was 3 - 4 chains from the road, was no longer standing. He investigated & found the place burned to the ground. Sgt A N Milligan later found the body. It is surmised that the man was bending over the fireplace when he had a seizure. It is thought his 2 dogs must also have shared his fate. Mr Te Toa was a returned soldier of the 1st WW & for many years was caretaker of a station property on the shores of Lake Tarawera.
