  • 1915 - LIEUTENANT W. H. WALKER. Lieutenant William H. Walker, Maori contingent, reported wounded, is a native of Rotoiti. He was educated at St. Stephen's School, Parnell, and won the senior Makanni scholarship in 1901. After a period at Te Aute College he entered the theological college at Te Rau, Gisborne, to train for the ministry, but left there for the Civil Service in 1906. He was one of the first to enlist in the Maori contingent and left Auckland as platoon sergeant, While in Malta he received his commission as second lieutenant. According to letters lately received from other officers of the contingent, Lieutenant Walker rendered valuable scouting services shortly after landing at Gallipoli.
