WEHIPEIHANA'S THANKS,
The following is a copy of a letter received by Mrs. Gunson, Mayoress, of Auckland from W. Wehipeihana, of the N. Z. Pioneers:—
"France, 12th. Feb. 1917. Dear Madam, I am the proud possessor of one of the many gifts received by our Company of Pioneers. It was from the Paeroa Branch of the Victoria League having your Ladyship as its President. Each man had a square cardboard box to himself, and mine contained 1 pair of socks, 1 tin of cigarettes, 1 towel, 1 jar of Lollies, a writing pad, and last but not least a postcard of a portion of Auckland. On the back of the card was written "Paeroa Branch". That is rather too general a name, as I would have known who the sender's name was if a person's name was shown instead. However, I am sure it is no light task to get these things together and forward them to the Boys at the Front. Moreover, we all appreciate the good things received and on behalf of my comrades in arms I take this opportunity of thanking you and your band of willing workers for the good things sent along. Regarding ourselves on the Western Front, I have the pleasure of informing you that we art holding our own against "Jack Frost". You have all no doubt heard how severe this winter has been on the Continent, and it's wonderful how the Boys are bearing up against it. In conclusion, we, the Maori Boys, again thank you and yours for their self sacrifice. Believe me, yours sincerely, No. 16/855 Sgt. W. Wehipeihana, N. Z. Pioneers.
