  • I remember my Grandfather as an honourable, quiet gentleman who was kind and humorous. I was too young to have spoken to him of his experiences but Mum told me that as a member of the Maori Contingent he was a "messenger" between trenches?? I know he was a keen athlete prior to the war and I have his winning running medal for the Two Mile event at the Maia Athletics Club, Dunedin. George returned to Dunedin as he became ill while at Gallipoli. I am proud of his service and his dignified manner.
