Biographical information
- Fanny Wilson was born in Wellington on 11 August 1884 and trained as a nurse at Wellington Hospital. By the outbreak of World War I she was working there as a registered nurse.
In August 1914, Wilson was one of six New Zealand nurses selected at short notice to accompany the New Zealand Expeditionary Force Advance Party to German Samoa. She travelled aboard Moeraki with Evelyn Brooke and Louise Brandon. After the New Zealand occupation of Samoa, the nurses worked at the hospital in Apia.
Wilson returned to New Zealand in 1915 and later served overseas in Egypt and with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. She subsequently held the rank of Matron and served with No. 2 New Zealand Stationary Hospital. Her wartime nursing service totalled more than five years.
For her service, Wilson was Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the Royal Red Cross.
After the war she continued her nursing career in Christchurch and became Principal Matron at Lewisham Private Hospital. She also remained involved with the New Zealand Army Nursing Service and was appointed Deputy Matron-in-Chief in 1923.
In 1931 Wilson was appointed Matron-in-Chief of the New Zealand Army Nursing Service. She retired from the position in 1933 and was permitted to retain her rank and wear the prescribed uniform. In 1938 she was appointed Honorary Colonel of the New Zealand Army Nursing Service.
Fanny Wilson died in Christchurch on 11 September 1958. AWMM
