  • One of the 50 Tuhoe soldiers who fought in WW1. Te Whanaupani, Te Urewera. Pvt. World War 1, 1914-1918, sn.16/237, 1st Māori Contingent, embarked in Wellington 14-Feb-1915 for Suez Egypt; Rupi also fought in the Boer War. He’d initially been sent to care for the horses but was eventually commandeered to fight; Labourer, b. 18-Mar-1882 Waikaremoana, aged 32 when he enlisted in 1914, dcd 1945 age 64 (Charles Timutimu Research Project).

    Urewera Lands Consolidation Scheme (Report of Commissioners as to position of). Appendix to the Journals of the House of Representatives, 1924 Session I, G-07."At a sitting of the Commission at Ruatoki in April last it was stated that a number of the Urewera Natives sold their lands prior to enlisting for the war; those who returned now find themselves landless, and they ask that the Crown give them land so that they may not be a burden on the members of their families."
