Biographical information
- Ada Hawken was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Hawken, of 16 Ranfurly Rd., Epsom, Auckland, New Zealand.
Next of Kin: Mr G. Hawken, Ranfurly Rd, Auckland (Roll of Honour, Auckland Province 1914-1918 (Volume 1))
Hawken served at the 19th General Hospital in Alexandria, Egypt. In a letter dated 19 August 1915 to Charlotte “Josie” Le Gallais, she described working 12-hour night shifts on hard marble floors and living at the former New Khedivial Hotel, which was being used as a nurses’ home.
Hawken became ill with enteric fever in October 1915 and was admitted to the 19th General Hospital. She died there on 28 October 1915 and was buried in Chatby Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Alexandria. AWMM
