Biographical information
- Father was Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi and his mother was Adi Litiana Maopa.
Brother of Ratu Sir Josefa Lalabalavu Vanayaliyali Sukuna KCMG KBE (22 April 1888 – 30 May 1958)
Enlisted 27 December 1915. Sailed for Egypt on SS Mokoia and disembarked at Suez 23 June 1916. Re-embarked from Alexandria for United Kingdom on 26 July 1916 and arrived at Sling Camp 24 August 1916. Posted to the Nw Zealand Pioneer Battalion in France 11 September 1916. Detached from the New Zealand Pioneer Battalion 14 January 1918 and sailed to Egypt 15 February 1918 to join the Rarotongan Company 5 March 1918. Admitted to 24th Stationary Hospital at Kantara 10 September 1918 with severe malaria and transferred to 27th General Hospital at Abbassia.
Convalesced in the Aotea Convalescent Home until rejoining the New Zealand Mounted Rifle Bde Training Regiment & Base Depot on 5 October 1918. Returned to New Zealand with the Rarotongan Company on SS Malta. Discharged 7/3/1919. In WWII he was known as J W T Vuiyasawa and served in 1st Battalion Fiji Labour Corps. AWMM

RATU TIALE WIMBLEDON THOMAS VUIYASAWA
In Suva in March, aged 85. A high chief of Lau and Bau, Ratu Tiale was the brother of the late Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna and the second son of Ratu Jone Madraiwiwi and Adi Litiana Maopa. He was also an uncle of the Tui Nayau, Fiji’s Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, and a close relative of the Vunivalu of Bau, Fiji’s Governor-General Ratu Sir George Cakobau. Ratu Tiale was educated at the Levuka Public School and Wesley College, Melbourne. He spent almost all his life in government service. He was appointed Native Assistant Commissioner, Lomaiviti, in 1933, RokoTui Ra in 1937, RokoTui Ba in 1945, and Roko Tui Cakaudrove in 1947. He has been described as a most efficient administrator of the ‘old school’, and a great believer in discipline. In accordance with Fijian tradition and protocol, the funeral gathering, attended by hundreds of mourners from all over the country, was held at Veiuto, chiefly residence of Ratu Mara. A memorial service was later held at Suva’s Centenary Church.
