The party was consistently exposed to enemy shell and machine-gun fire being on the exposed flank.     • Tono or Tonotu Paraone 1895 -1932 was one of two sons of Hoori (Charlie) Tahua Paraone (Brown). Hoori Tahua was the son of Hirini maihi Paraone.
      Hirini was a grandson to Kawiti, Tono’s brother was Maihi Tahu Paraone. 1895 -1962. AWMM
    • THE MILITARY MEDAL
      TONO BROWN KAWITI. Tono Brown Kawiti, who distinguished himself by winning the Military Medal during the recent fighting in France, is a descendant of a line of warriors. He is the great grandson on both sides of the old warrior, Kawiti of Ruapekapeka Pa fame, Brown being added when Sir Gore Brown was Governor of New Zealand. He has been on active service over a year, having joined the Expeditionary Forces early in 1916. His home is at Waiomio, near Kawakawa, and the Ruapekapeka Pa overlooks the Maori settlement there.
