  • "Raukawa Hura was attached to strength of the New Zealand Infantry at the New Zealand General Base Depot at Etaples until 27 September when he joined the Maori (Pioneer) Battalion on the Somme. The new advance on Flers with the aim of capturing factory Corner had begun on 25 September. The Pioneers were required to construct various advanced lines of communication trenches." (Church, p.125)

"During September the Pioneers worked on erecting barbwire entanglements, but on the 19, Raukawa was evacuated to hospital sick, suffering from conjunctivitis. His health did not improve so he was transferred to No.1 New Zealand General Hospital, Brockenhurst. He was a patient for four months." (Church, p.125)
