  • One of the 50 Tuhoe soldiers who fought in WW1. Hāmua, Ngāi Tama. L/Cpl. World War 1, 1914-1918, sn 16/1584, 5th Reinforcements Māori Contingent, embarked in Wellington for Devonport, England. Shearer, next of kin - Tuau Tuhoe (father) Ruatoki; b. July 1893 Ruatoki, aged 22 when he enlisted in 1916, dcd 21-Mar-1958 age 70 (Charles Timutimu Research Project).

    Urewera Lands Consolidation Scheme (Report of Commissioners as to position of). Appendix to the Journals of the House of Representatives, 1924 Session I, G-07."At a sitting of the Commission at Ruatoki in April last it was stated that a number of the Urewera Natives sold their lands prior to enlisting for the war; those who returned now find themselves landless, and they ask that the Crown give them land so that they may not be a burden on the members of their families." Tuhoe was listed as one of these men. AWMM
