  • AUCKLAND, Last Night (PA).— Jointly charged with assaulting and killing Andrew Hokai on June 3, thereby committing manslaughter, two Maoris, Tamarae Hokai, aged 48, moulder, of Hokianga, and his son, Pene Tauwi Hokai, aged 22, of Mangakino, appeared before Mr. F. McCarthy. Detective-Sergeant Knapp stated that in an interview, Pene Hokai admitted that he had struck Andrew Hokai at the corner of Wellesley and Nelson Streets. A statement made by Tumarae Hokai was then read, in which accused described how a quarrel started and blows were exchanged.
The case was adjourned until Thursday.
