  • Married Waerea Waikari Karaitiana on 11 August 1927 at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Hastings, Hawke's Bay. On marriage into the Roman Catholic faith, Mari adopted the name Hohepa (Joseph). He was the father of Anthony Waikari Panapa and the older brother of Private Pita Tauriri Panapa 817730 who served in the 28 Maori Battalion in the Second World War. Family source.

Birth date stated incorrectly on Military Personnel File as 16 January 1896, which was in fact his sister, Amiria (Milly) Panapa/Logan's date of birth. Name incorrectly spelt as Mari Taupiri Panapa in Nominal Rolls.
