Letter to 'Jack' from 'Reg' [Hugh Reginald Clark] dated 24 July 1916, describing trench life in France and sharing news of being assigned to the '8th Battery'. (4 leaves)

Extracts from the text read as follows:

Extract 1

[Page 1]

"You will see by the heading where we are. We are not permitted to say just what part of the country we are in but no doubt the newspapers will have already given you a good idea, the censorship here is naturally very strict as we have to be careful what we write or our letters are destroyed."

Extract 2

[Page 2]

"I have been in the firing line now nearly three months and so far have managed to dodge the shells. At times they have sent a few over quite close enough to be unpleasant and one morning especially 'Fritz' seemed very annoyed with us waking us up before reveille and making us run for it."
