King corresponded with Daisy Stodel, whom he met in Cape Town, South Africa, until his death in France on 21 February 1917. Stodel's letters to him were later returned marked 'deceased'. The death of Herbert King is also mentioned in the diary of William Roland Ahier (Ref. No. MS-2004-76).
