Jenifer Mary Curnow - Wiremu Maihi Te Rangikaheke : His life and work [copy]

documentary heritage

Photocopy of the abstract, preface and bibliography of Curnow's thesis submitted for M.A. (Māori Studies) at the University of Auckland, 1983.

The purpose of this thesis is to repair some of the deficiencies in the study of Wiremu Maihi Te Rangikaheke, whose manuscripts were the source of most of the prose material in the appendices to Sir George Grey's "Ko Ngaa Mooteatea me Ngaa Hakirara Maaori" ["Ko Nga Moteatea me Nga Hakirara Maori"] (1853), and much of the material for his "Ko Ngaa Mahinga a Ngaa Tuupuna Maaori" ["Ko Nga Mahinga a Nga Tupuna Maori"] (1854), and its translation, Polynesian Mythology (1855). Grey did not acknowledge his informant and introduced alterations, combinations, and omissions in "Ko Ngaa Mahinga a Ngaa Tuupuna Maaori". Te Rangikaheke's writings became the major part of the earliest accounts of Māori history and culture.
