H.E. Partridge's Store - glass plate collection

Henry Edward Partridge, 1848-1931, established and ran the successful tobacconist shop and business, H.E. Partridge & Co. The store was located at 202 or 204 Queen Street (due to numbering changes on Queen Street over the years) and primarily sold tobacco but also traded in sporting goods.

In 1870 Partridge married New Zealand born, Miriam Odlum and had 7 children, Lillian, Harry, Myra, Eileen & Colleen. His children, Ethel & Horace, did not survive through infancy.

Partridge was a dedicated patron of Gottfried Lindauer, acquiring over 70 paintings by the artist. The collection, known as the Partridge Collection was accessioned into Auckland Art Gallery in 1915.

The studio above his shop housed a variety of photographers over the years but it seems Partridge maintain the original glass plates and possibly the copyright.
