Pulou

human history

Pulou. Hat. This a handwoven pulou. This pulou has been woven using thin strands of lau 'ie (pandanus). The brim of the pulou is woven using two different coloured lau 'ie, a natural beige and a dark brown coloured lau 'ie. The use of contrasting colours creates a checker-board design. The side of the crown is woven using the same coloured lau 'ie. The design along the crown however is a row of diamonds alternating in colour. The top of the crown is woven using the two different coloured lau 'ie to create a star shaped design. Along the top of the crown is a small tear indicative of how fragile the lau 'ie is. The underside of the pulou is just as decorative as the topside and the colours are inverted.
