Tauaga

human history

Tauaga. Strainer. This is a tauaga made of fau (type of hibiscus). This tauaga has been rolled into a rough oval shape and is coloured a natural beige with a fibrous texture. The tauaga is created by stripping fau strands into thinner strands. These strands are then nuti (rubbed) between two hands to crinkle them. All these thin strands are then combined to make the tauaga. This type of tauaga were used to squeeze penu (grated coconut) to extract the cream.
