Nifo'oti
Nifo'oti. Hooked cane knife. This nifo'oti is made of several components, a metal blade, a wooden handle and 'afa (sennit) to bind the two materials together. The blade of this nifo'oti is flat and rectangular and has rusted over time making it a brown colour. The blade is wedged into a cylindrical handle made of wood which is also brown. The blade is further secured to the wooden handle with four metallic bands, which have also become brown with rust. As a further fausaga (bind), and an interesting decorative feature, 'afa has been wrapped around the length of the handle. The term nifo'oti is understood a number of ways. One theory references the nifo (curve) of an 'oti (goat) horn as being the inspiration behind the design. Another describes how the nifo (teeth) were used to 'oti (to cut). Formerly the nifo'oti was used as an 'au'upega (weapon of war) to behead slain enemies and the lave used for storage. Today the nifo'oti survives as a dancing knife used by both male and females for entertainment purposes.
