With a plentiful supply of large trees, Fijian craftsmen produced several types of dugouts ranging from small lagoon canoes to large ocean-going vessels. The camakau is a dugout sailing canoe with outrigger, added washstrakes and decking. A plaited pandanus sail drives this canoe through the water at speeds up to 8 or 9 knots. Larger camakau are still used for fishing and inter-island transport. In earlier times, some camakau were 30 metres in length and required a crew of forty men. Double-hulled Fijian ndrua dugouts with similar sail and rigging wren the largest vessels ever built in Oceania and could carry over 200 people.
