Ahu
Ahu. Carved ceremonial Ceremonial Scoop. This long-handled Ahu (scoop or Ceremonial Scoop) is carved from ra'au (hardwood). The bowl is deep, curved and narrow in shape. At its apex it is cut to a blunt tip. The to'o (shaft0 is long and slender, round in section. The to'o flares out towards the butt which is carved into eight stylised ti'i (ancestral human figures) arranged concentrically. The Ahu is reddish brown in colour with slight patina. The surface of the ra'au is finely carved with compartmentalised bands of geometric patterns.
