Paopao model
Paopao model. Canoe model. This model is made from wood and is an exemple of a paopao. The liu (hull) has a smooth unpolished finish and is adorned with mamanu (Samoan decorative motifs). These mamanu are carved out along the top edges of the liu. Holes have also been drilled into the side of the liu in order to fafau (lash) the 'iato (booms) to the liu. The two 'iato are rectangular in shape and are fafau to the liu with 'afa (sennit). However one of the 'iato have snapped but are still attached to the paopao as a whole. The tu'itu'i (pegs) are fafau to the 'iato with 'afa and are inserted into the holes drilled in the ama (outrigger). The 'ama is a lighter shade of brown then the rest of the paopao and is rectangular in shape with a pointed tip. The paopao is accompanied by one foe (paddle) which is coloured the same shade of brown as the liu. The foe has a rectangular handle and a triangular blade. The paopao is a type of outrigger canoe used by the Samoan population for every day fishing done closer to land.
