Ko‘i

human history

Ko‘i. Stone adze rough out. Adzes were invaluable tools for Moana Pacific societies prior to the introduction of European tools and materials. They were made in a variety of sizes and shapes according to their required use. This ko‘i (adze) is presented in its rough out form, worked from pōhaku (basalt stone) into a long rectangular shape. It is rectangular in cross-section. The blade reduces towards the poll with a slightly raised shoulder giving the ko‘i a curved profile. The front surface of the blade is flat with all surfaces left flaked. It has a raised sloping bevel. The ko‘i is grey brown in colour.
