To make this ornament, the inner whorls of an Ovula ovum shell have been broken out so that the shell opening can be pushed over the end of the penis. This ornament was only worn on special occasions as a war and dance ornament. Particular dances were designed to highlight the men’s athletic ability to swing their penis in rhythm. On other occasions, this shell might be worn clipped over a man’s ear. When not in use the shell was sometimes carried in a little plaited fibre bag around the man’s neck. Usually the incised designs coloured black with soot are geometric but figurative representations have been described. Women have been recorded wearing a shell like this clipped on their ear during bride-price ceremonies. (Pacific Jewellery and Adornment by Roger Neich and Pandora Fulimalo Pereira, 2004)
