Toki maka

human history

Toki maka. Stone adze. Adzes were invaluable tools for Moana Pacific societies prior to the introduction of European tools and materials. They were made in a variety of sizes and shapes according to their required use. This toki (adze) is presented in its complete form, worked from maka uli (volcanic stone) that is dark in colour. The toki is rectangular in overall shape and rectangular in cross section. It is slightly curved in profile. The toki has a sharp cutting edge and sloped bevel. The sides and back of the blade are flaked while the front of the toki is highly polished.
