I'o 'ava
I'o 'ava. Kava root. Tugase. Kava root with attached long stem. 'Ava (kava) is the name for the entire plant, root, powder, and beverage. 'Ava like this one are referred to as tugase, and consist of the root of the plant as well as a long part of the stem. Tugase are used for ceremonial presentations where they are gifted form one person or party to another. This particular one is completely dried out, light brown in colour, the stem is long and cylindrical in shape and a part of the root is still attached.

I'o 'ava refers to the root in its entirety before it has been separated into smaller pieces or ground into its powder form. Ground up 'ava is mixed with water to make a beverage which is served for 'ava ceremonies as well as other formal occasions. This i'o 'ava has a fair amount of the stem still attached to the root. It is completely dried out and is off white and brown in colour.
