Tānoa

human history

Tānoa. Kava bowl. Carved from one piece of wood, this tānoa is held up by ten cylindrical legs and would have been used to contain 'ava (Kava) for an 'ava ceremony. The tānoa is a dark brown colour and has a smooth polished surface both inside the bowl and outside it. The bowl has a thick rim that is chipped and cracked in several areas. The bowl is held up by six cylindrical legs. Some of the legs have also chipped at the base making the bowl quite unstable. In between two of the cylindrical legs is a rectangular protrusion drilled with two small suspension holes. Through one of the holes a length of 'afa (sennit) has been threaded through.
