Iliili

human history

Iliili. Fan. This is a hand held fan. It consists of two components, a handle and a woven blade. The handle is made of a light weight wood that appears black, almost dark brown and is made from kieto (ebony wood). Its uneven surface portrays hafted markings possibly from shaping into its current form. The cross-section of the base is uneven in surface. The blade is flat in form. Its shape is curved with a straight edge at its base. The weave pattern appears to used a knotting technique where a pinnule is wrapped over another pinnule and then knotted repeatedly creating an open-weave look. The blade has been made from kāniu (coconut midribs) and lau niu (coconut leaf). Triangular patterns are defined by dark brown dyed pinnules. The points of the triangular motifs point towards the spine of the blade. The spine is defined by how the pinnules horizontally cover the end length of the handle. A fibrous end is loose on one side and the tip of the handle length is exposed from the central part of the blade.
