i Ula. Throwing club. i Ula are carved from the rootstock of a hardwood tree. It is intended as a weapon that can be gripped in the hand or thrown in short range distances at assailants. This i Ula consists of a bulbous head and long slender adjoining handle. The head is lobed unevenly, its shape somewhat predetermined by the natural formation of the rootstock. The main form is topped with a rounded protrusion at its centre. The handle is long and cylindrical, though slightly bent, with many surface scratches visible. The butt is flat with a small hole drilled at its centre and a chip at its edge. The i Ula is reddish brown in colour and has a somewhat glossy patina.
