Kapa

human history

Kapa. Bark cloth sample. Made from the baste of tree bark from the wauke (Paper mulberry tree; Broussonetia papyrifera). It is a rectangular shape and flat in form. It is light and delicate to handle. When held up to the light there are impressions made from the 'upena halua pupu beater. It has retained its natural colour. Surface decoration has been applied with natural dye treatments. A surface design borders the sample. These have been arranged in a pattern: one line of black triangular motifs with a rough line of brown and red ochre in between. The black lines may have been stamped using an 'ohe kapala and the brown line may have been applied with a lapa by hand. Its uneven edges show it was cut from a larger piece.
