Toki maka

human history

Toki maka. Stone adze. Adzes were invaluable tools for Moana Pacific societies prior to the introduction of European tools and materials. They were made in a variety of sizes and shapes according to their required use. This toki (adze) is presented in its complete form, worked from maka (basalt stone) that is dark in colour. The toki is trapezoidal in overall shape and cross section. The toki has a sharp cutting edge and steep bevel, which is highly polished. The sides, front and back of the blade are polished with areas of flaking still visible. The blade reduces to the poll which has been left pecked.
