Kato pesi

human history

Kato pesi. Small bag. This kato pesi is made from lau fā (pandanus leaf) and polata futi (dried banana stalk outer fibre). It is rectangular in shape and flat in form. A flat opening features at the top of the rectangular shaped kato pesi. The rim has been finished as a woven serrated edge. Mata pelē (woven patterns) have been defined by the use of polata futi. Polata futi portrays a dark brown and speckled surface texture that has been used to define two borders that surround both the front and back of kato pesi. A single kavei (handle) has been attached as a separate component to the centre of the opening edges of the kato pesi. The lau fā has retained a natural pale yellow colour. A braid at the base of the kato pesi shows some indication of how the process of weaving would be concluded.
