Te reeree

human history

Te reeree. Sword. This is a hand held weapon made from the following materials: kanni (coconut palm wood), irauea (cordage of human hair), ira (pandanus leaf), nimwaerere (cordage of human hair and coconut sennit fibre), noko (coconut midrib) and wii ni bakoa (sharksteeth). A length of the kanni has been cut, carved and filed into a cylindrical form. Its base shows a circular cross-section that has been filed into a tapered point for the top of the reeree. A section from the base has been left exposed for the purpose of a handle. A coil of the irauea and a width of the ira has been woven and bound off over where the handle and barbed blade intersect. The coil features loose lengths of the irauea and the woven wrap of the ira is fibrous with a fringed finish. Two pairs of the noko run parallel along both edges of the blade. Both show a continuous inlay of wii ni bakoa. Each wii ni bakoa shows a drilled perforation through its centre where the nimwaerere has been inserted and used for securing and positioning both wii ni bakoa and the noko to the reeree. Two coils of the irauea have been wrapped around the blade beneath the lashing over the blade.
