The "Auckland Meteorite" is a stony meteorite. At 9.30 am on 12 June 2004 a meteorite crashed through the roof of the home of the Archer family in Ellerslie. This meteorite has been called the "Ellerslie Meteorite" but is better named unofficially as the "Auckland Meteorite". A meteorite is named after the nearest post office to where it was found. However, an Ellerslie Meteorite had already been discovered in 1905 near Ellerslie in Queensland, Australia. Hence the Queensland Ellerslie Meteorite has priority naming rights. For a meteorite to be officially named and recognised by the Meteoritical Society it first has to be analysed by a recognised laboratory. This analysis is yet to be done for the Auckland Meteorite.
