'Ato ta'ita'i

human history

'Ato ta'ita'i. Hand bag. This is a hand woven 'ato (bag; basket). Its's receptacle section is square in shape and flat in form. It features a triangular flap that portrays an envelope-style aesthetic. A single 'au (handle) has been attached to the two top corners. The interior of the 'ato features a plain lalaga (weave) of lau paogo (coarse pandanus material) contributing to its stiff shape. The exterior has been woven from lau fala (soft pandanus material) and features a variety of patterns defined by black dyed pinnules against naturally coloured pinnules. The edges of the opening and the flap have been bound off with lau fala also. A small off-white pule (cowrie shell) has been attached with 'afa (cordage of sennit) to the corner of the flap. Adjacent to this, a loop of the same kind of 'afa has been attached to the exterior of the 'ato for the purpose of fastening the flap down. The 'au has been braided with both black dyed and naturally coloured lau fala portraying an alternating pattern.
