Te iriba

human history

Iriba. Fan. This fan is flat in form and teardrop in shape. A slim cylindrical handle starts from the centre of the teardrop area of the iriba and extends outwards. Two main material components feature on the iriba: black dyed kiaiai bast (hibiscus; hibiscus tiliaceus) and a natural tan coloured kakoko (the white, young leaf of the coconut). A slim and hard material appears to reinforce the internal spine of the handle. A wide woven border of black dyed kiaiai bast and natural toned kakoko frame the iriba. The wide border is made up by a pattern of diamond-like motifs. The join between the plain woven kakoko centre of the iriba and the wide border is finished with a thin border made up of black dyed kiaiai bast and neutral toned kakoko. One end of the handle starts in the centre of the plain woven area of the iriba. The handle is encased with a black dyed kiaiai bast and natural toned kakoko cover.
