Hoe

human history

Hoe. Carved ceremonial canoe paddle. This hoe (paddle) is carved from ra'au (hardwood) into a long slender cylindrical to'o (shaft) and a leaf shaped rapa (paddle blade). The to'o flares towards the butt end of the hoe into a conical shape of six elaborately carved and stylised ti'i (ancestral human figures). These are arranged concentrically around the butt although only five figures remain (the rest have been broken off and are missing). Bands of fine geometric motifs are carved in light relief over all surfaces of the hoe. The hoe is dark in colour with a glossy patina.
