'Uatogi

human history

'Uatogi. Ribbed club. This 'uatogi is made from one piece of toa (ironwood). The handle of this 'uatogi is cylindrical in shape. At the base of the handle is a semi-circular protrusion with a suspension hole drilled through it. The handle then widens to a flat four-sided blade with a diamond cross-section. The blade of this 'uatogi is adorned in five bands comprised of individual ridges. Beginning where the blade meets the handle is one band made up of five individual ribs. As the bands move up the blade, the number of individual ribs increases by one. These bands are the same dark brown colour as the rest of the 'uatogi and serve as a very unique decorative feature. The surface of the 'uatogi is smooth and has clearly been varnished however, it is blemished with a few dents at the tip of the blade, and a few broken ridges. The 'uatogi is a type of 'au'upega (weapon of war) recognised for its ribbed blade. The ribs not only strengthen it but make it much more lethal when used in combat.
