Te baia te ru. Woven hat. This is a woven hat of te ira (pandanus leaf), dark brown human hair and dark purple dyed hibiscus baste. When flat in form it is triangular in shape, but when worn it forms a pyramid shape. A border of dark brown human hair decorates the edge of the hat on both sides. Four squares that form a cross-like motif has been featured as a pair on both sides of the hat. These are defined by the use of dark purple dyed hibiscus baste in the weave and a grey, brown fiber of te ira that has not been dried to maintain its dark colour. Above these motifs is another border of similar design to the base in the dark brown human hair. The top of the hat is finished with a flat edge. Inside the hat, another flap has been woven inside to create a space for storage. This typy of hat is worn by men for everyday use.
