Te anima

human history

Te anima. Bailer. This is a receptacle used and kept on te wa (canoe). It is made of wood from te itai (Calophyllum inophyllum). It is shaped like the hull of te wa and does not feature a handle. It has fractured over time and portrays missing fragments from the cavity. Te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage) has been used to hold the fractures together. This can be seen in four areas across the hull-shape of the cavity. The wood appears water worn and the surface is uneven from the wood grain. The uneven surface can be defined by the blackened areas from the dark brown colour of the wood. This would be used to scoop water from te wa, however it is said that the best te wa builders would not need them but all would have them.
