Te binobino

human history

Te binobino. Coconut shell container. This binobino is made from a whole te nana (coconut shell) which is medium brown in colour with a smooth and polisehd surface treatment. It is not strictly spherical in shape. It is used for storing te bwa ni kangaraooi (coconut oil). Other scented oils, drinking water or medicinal liquid may have also been stored in a binobino. A scented oil could be custom-mixed as a gift for a particular person and stored in this container to bring good fortune to them. At the top of the binobino, one of the natural openings of the nana (coconut shell) is plugged with a thick wad of bann te kaina (pandanus leaf) as a stopper.
