Kafu lauulu

human history

Kafa lauulu. Girdle of human hair. Kafa lauulu were made by highly skilled women who were expert in the weaving of this highly sought-after taoga (treasure). It is intended to be worn around the waist. The lauulu (human hair) used for braiding and making kafu lauulu would have been sourced by a highly ranked person or close relative. This kafu lauulu consists of finely three-ply braided strands of lauulu bound together to create longer length and overall thickness. The resulting kafa (girdle) is finished into a loop at each end. The hair is dark in colour with some strands visibly frayed and broken.
