Banana fibre woven bag
Loom weaving. Woven from white banana tree fibre. Two bands of black pattern, black strips from birpiba banana tree. The pattern on this example is called ninatirmbla. It is also decorated with fine fibre tassles called dirlap = fringe of fibre. This is obtained by further scraping the white banana to remove all fleshy parts. Made and presented by Selwyn Balu of Nirle Village. Made and presented by Selwyn Balu of Nirle Village. He is son of Jonas Kupuke (also a weaver) and name sake of his deceased uncle (brother of Kupuke). Banana tree bast fibre; natural and dyed black. Dyed black strips incorporated as wefts in two bands of patterning.
