Museum Medal
museum medal designed by artist Marte Szirmay, 2022.
Szirmay’s design for the Museum Medal is made to be held. Their design nest nicely into the palm of the hand, both as a gesture of protecting and cherishing. Szirmay considered the nature of bronze and how it would warm up with the body’s temperature, further enhances this concept. The design of the medals are stylised after ‘Baskets of Knowledge.’ The obverse of the form is an allusion to seeking and linking knowledge, action, commitment to the interest of the Museum. The reverse of the form have unfinished threads of fibre to signify ongoing knowledge being generated. Szirmay also intended the design of the folded over fibres to suggest that the raranga (weaving) is seen like a cloak that signifies the mana of the award and the name of the recipient, which is engraved in the open space.
