Image Orders
Whether you're undertaking research, publishing a book, creating educational resources or developing commercial content, Auckland Museum can help you access high-quality images from our collections.
More than 300,000 collection images are available through Collections Online. Many can be downloaded immediately, while others can be requested through our Image Order Service.

Search Collections Online to see whether your required image is already available.
Many images can be downloaded immediately at no cost. Look for images labelled © Auckland Museum CC BY or No Known Copyright Restrictions, or use the Downloadable Images filter when searching.
If an image is not yet available online, or you require a higher-resolution file, you can submit an image request.
Our Image Order Service can provide:
High-resolution publication images
New photography of collection objects
Research images
Exhibition images
Commercial image licences
To request an image, complete an Image Order Form.
Please include:
Object or collection number (if known)
Description of the item
Intended use
Publication or project details
Required image size or resolution
Required delivery date
Where a suitable digital image already exists, we aim to complete requests within three weeks.
Requests requiring new photography, conservation preparation, object handling, copyright clearance or cultural consultation may take longer.
For publication projects involving collection objects or documentary heritage material, please allow at least three months.
Rush services may be available for some requests and are subject to additional fees.
Processing fee, including Cenotaph images
$20 per image
Object-handling and photography fee
$150 per item
Outsourced object photography or other digitisation
Cost recovery plus standard processing fees
Reproduction fee, including second and subsequent uses of an image
Personal or academic use: $0
Commercial use: $30
Rush fee for Documentary Heritage items
1–2 business days: an additional 100% of the processing fee
3–5 business days: an additional 50% of the processing fee
Rush fee for other collections, including objects
To be negotiated and will include cost recovery. Auckland Museum reserves the right to decline rush orders.
Research fee
After the first 30 minutes, research is charged at $50 per hour.
Royalty payable to a third party
Variable, as set by the third-party copyright holder.
