  • Son of Hipa and Fokitifa.

    Four sons, brothers enlisted: Peni (16/1115), Hemu (16/1052), Hipa (16/1053) and Pulu (16/1107) (Pointer 2000, p. 16).

    Attested as Peni, and named as Peni on the Nominal Roll. The Christian name Meta was added to Service Record in 1923. He is named Peni HIPA on the Hikutavake Memorial and by Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The portrait of "Private Peni", which appeared in the Auckland Weekly News (5 October 1916, p. 40) incorrectly records him as having died of wounds.

    Arrived Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand on 19 October 1915 (Pointer 2000, p. 18).

    Sailed from Alexandria, Egypt, to Marseilles, France, on board SS Ivernia on 20 May 1916. (Pointer 2000, p. 173)

    Sailed from England to New Zealand on board HT Corinthic on 17 June 1916. (Pointer 2000, p. 174)
