  • Warena was the son of William and Ari Warena, of Morrinsville, New Zealand.

    Warena left for France on 5 September in the Reserve Group and was attached to strength at Etaples on 8 September.

    "Warena never reached the Front line because he fell ill on 2 October with influenza and tuberculosis of the lung. Within three weeks he was a patient at No.1 NZGH, Brockenhurst. He survived less than a fortnight longer." (Church, p.210)

    Warena's brother also died in the Great War only days before him. He was Private Kitohi Warena, 16/1354. (Church, p.210)

    Embarked Wellington, 26 April 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 20 July 1917, and marched into Sling Camp.
    Marched out Sling Camp and proceeded overseas to France, 5 September 1917; attached to strength NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 8 September 1917.
    Admitted to No 24 General Hospital, Etaples, 2 October 1917 (influenza and tuberculous of lung).
    Embarked on HS 'Stad Antwerpen' for England, 12 October 1917, and admitted same day to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst.
    Placed on 'Seriously Ill' List, 20 October 1917.
    Placed on 'Dangerously Ill' List, 22 October 1917.
    Died, 1 November 1917 (tuberculous of lung).
